Get the racist slurs out of these official government place names

racist-names-for-federal-placesMore than 1,400 locations across America have racist slurs, dehumanizing language, or other derogatory terms in their federally-recognized official names. Targeting Blacks, Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and Italian-Americans in particular, these offensive name places are shameful reminders of the country’s legacy of institutionalized racial and ethnic bigotry.

It doesn’t have to be that way. The U.S. Geographic Names Board, which meets monthly in Washington, D.C. to consider name changes, should undertake a comprehensive effort to revise and modernize these place names for the 21st century.
